比罗陀守德招福
佛陀时代，有一位名叫修陀罗的长者，拥有无数的财富，平日为人乐善好施，并虔诚信仰佛教，自己更发愿：每年腊八（十二月初八）当天，一定要诚心、竭尽所能布施财物来供养佛陀及众比丘，甚至往后世世代代的子孙都要依此奉行，不可废止。长者一直到临终前，还一再吩咐儿子比罗陀一定要切实遵行此遗训，千万不可忘记。
长者死后，家道日渐衰微，一无所有。比罗陀眼看一年一度的腊八又要到了，而家中已无多余的钱财来供养佛陀及众比丘，想着想着不禁感到愁闷不安。于是慈悲的佛陀派目犍连尊者前去关心、询问比罗陀，比罗陀说：「父亲的遗训，不敢违背忘记，我依旧办理，只希望世尊到时，可不要见弃才好！」随后，比罗陀就向妻子的父母借了一百两银子，用心筹备办理腊八供僧事宜。
当天，佛陀带着一千二百五十位比丘前往比罗陀家中，接受夫妻俩至诚的供养。两人满心欢喜地供养每位比丘僧，从头到尾不曾有任何一丝一毫的后悔及不悦。第二天早上，比罗陀夫妻发现家中以前存放财宝的地方，竟然堆积如以前一般多的宝物，两人感到又惊又喜。但又不知是何原因，会不会遭殃祸？就决定去请示佛陀。
于是比罗陀去到精舍请示佛陀，佛陀告诉比罗陀：「这些宝物，你们安心使用，不须疑虑，这是因为你能守信、不违背父亲的教诲，又能严持戒律、知惭知愧，对佛法僧三宝虔诚恭敬、欢喜供养。因为你具备『信、戒、惭、愧、闻、施、慧』等七种行道者的德行，才有此福报招来财富，所以不会带来灾害。有智慧的人，会依佛法奉行，不论男女，所生之处，福报都是自然而来的。」
比罗陀听了佛陀开示后，更加坚定对佛法的信心，至心顶礼后，欢欢喜喜的回家。将佛陀的教诲一一的告诉妻子，并发愿一定要将佛法一代一代的延续，让子孙都能得受法益。

Biluotuo’s Virtuous Conduct Brings Blessings
During the Buddha’s time, there lived a wealthy elder named Sudra, who possessed immeasurable riches. He was generous by nature, delighted in giving, and was a devout follower of the Buddha. He made a solemn vow that every year on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month (Laba Day), he would sincerely offer whatever he could to support the Buddha and the community of bhikkhus. Furthermore, he wished that this tradition would be faithfully observed by his descendants for generations to come and never be abandoned.
Even on his deathbed, the elder repeatedly instructed his son, Biluotuo, to carry out this final wish faithfully and never forget it.
After the elder passed away, the family gradually fell into poverty until they had nothing left. As the annual Laba Day approached once again, Biluotuo saw that there was no money in the household with which to make offerings to the Buddha and the Sangha. The more he thought about it, the more anxious and distressed he became.
Out of compassion, the Buddha sent the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana (Maudgalyāyana) to visit and inquire about his situation.
Biluotuo replied:
“I dare not forget or disobey my father’s final instruction. I shall still prepare the offering as before. I only hope that when the time comes, the World-Honored One will not reject my humble offering.”
Afterward, Biluotuo borrowed one hundred taels of silver from his wife’s parents and carefully prepared everything needed for the Laba offering to the Sangha.
On the appointed day, the Buddha led one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikkhus to Biluotuo’s home and compassionately accepted the sincere offerings made by the husband and wife.
Filled with joy, the couple respectfully served every member of the Sangha. Throughout the entire offering, not the slightest trace of regret or reluctance arose in their hearts.
The following morning, Biluotuo and his wife discovered that the place where their family had once stored its treasures was once again filled with precious valuables, just as it had been in former days.
They were astonished and delighted, yet also uncertain of the cause, wondering whether such unexpected wealth might instead bring misfortune. Therefore, they decided to seek the Buddha’s guidance.
Biluotuo went to the monastery and respectfully asked the Buddha about this matter.
The Buddha said:
“You may use these treasures with peace of mind and without fear. This wealth has arisen because you kept your promise and did not violate your father’s instruction. You also uphold the precepts, possess a sense of moral shame and moral conscience, sincerely respect the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, and joyfully make offerings.
Because you possess the seven noble qualities of a practitioner—faith, morality, moral shame, moral conscience, learning, generosity, and wisdom—you have now received this blessing of wealth. Therefore, these riches will not bring calamity.
A wise person lives in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings. Whether man or woman, wherever such a person is born, blessings naturally arise.”
After hearing the Buddha’s teaching, Biluotuo’s faith in the Dharma became even firmer.
He respectfully bowed to the Buddha with utmost sincerity and returned home filled with joy.
He carefully shared every word of the Buddha’s teaching with his wife, and together they vowed to preserve and pass down the Buddha’s Dharma from generation to generation so that all their descendants might benefit from its profound teachings.
