The Monkey and the Hunter

Long ago, deep within a mountain forest, there lived a monkey. This monkey not only possessed extraordinary strength but also remarkable wisdom. Above all, it constantly cherished the compassionate vow to benefit and save all living beings.

One day, while climbing to the top of a tree to gather fruit, the monkey saw from afar a hunter trapped in a deep ravine, crying out desperately for help.

Upon hearing the hunter’s cries, the monkey wept sorrowfully and said:

“I once vowed to attain Buddhahood for the very purpose of saving all beings. If I do not rescue this man today, he will surely die here.”

Determined to save him, the monkey climbed down the steep cliff into the valley. Carrying the hunter upon its back, it painstakingly climbed the rocky cliff covered with vines and grass. Exhausted and stumbling, it finally reached a level hillside.

With sincere compassion, the monkey earnestly advised the hunter:

“You fell into this ravine while hunting and taking the lives of other creatures. Now that you have finally been rescued, I hope this experience will teach you a lesson. Please repent and change your ways. Never again create evil karma by hunting animals and taking innocent lives.”

The hunter, exhausted from hunger and cold, lay upon the grass trying to catch his breath.

Yet he completely ignored the monkey’s heartfelt advice.

  Instead, he secretly thought:

“Earlier, I was nearly starving to death down in the ravine because there was no food. Even now, lying here on this hillside, I will eventually starve anyway. I might as well kill this monkey and eat its flesh to save my own life.”

In an instant, the ungrateful hunter picked up a large stone and hurled it at the monkey’s head.

The monkey was completely unprepared for the sudden attack. Blood streamed from its head. Though shocked and attempting to rise, it collapsed to the ground.

Even after suffering such a cruel betrayal, the monkey felt no regret.

Instead, it became even more compassionate toward the hunter, grieving that he remained so deeply consumed by evil intentions and incapable of repentance.

  The monkey gently said:

“Today I have been unable to transform this man. May he, in future lives, always receive the compassionate light and protection of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, develop faith in the Dharma, and ultimately attain liberation.”

In this story, the compassionate monkey was a previous life of Shakyamuni Buddha while cultivating the Bodhisattva Path, and the hunter in the ravine was Devadatta.
