佛度护国王子出家缘
一日，佛陀在拘毗罗国城外吐罗树下入定，察知王子护国的得度因缘已经成熟，于是率领大众比丘前往城中度化。
佛陀一踏入城里，大地涌现六种震动，空中也落下无数美妙的花朵，佛陀的身上散发着慈光，无私地照在城内的每一个角落。因为佛光，盲者能看，聋者得听，哑者能语，而不良于行的跛者则能行动自如，大众此时都欢喜无比地来到街道旁，迎接佛陀的到来。
在皇宫内的护国王子，见到如此无与伦比的慈光，赞叹不已，立刻循着光明来到佛前。当他看见佛陀的相好庄严、威仪具足，如同百千个太阳的光芒，普照十方大地，欢喜之余立刻顶礼佛足。此时，佛陀慈悲为王子宣说苦、集、灭、道四谛法门。听到佛陀的法音，护国王子心开意解，当下证得须陀洹果，进而生起出家修行的愿心。
回到皇宫后的护国王子，高兴地告诉国王种种经过，赞叹佛的功德不可思议。他说：「佛陀若未出家，必是转轮圣王，能力足以统治天下，常有七宝随身，不管到哪里都能自在无碍。佛陀具有如此福德，尚能舍离世间的种种荣华富贵，出家修行，何况是福德、智慧都不如佛陀的我呢？所以儿臣请求父王允许我随伟大的佛陀出家修行。」
听到护国王子的请求，国王遮耳不听，拒绝了护国王子的请求。王子见到国王的反应，懊恼自己的福德不足，深自忏悔。从那时起，就拒绝进食，思惟佛陀的教诲，一天、两天，一直到第六天，护国王子欲出家修行的道心坚固，依然不肯进食。
朝中大臣见王子愿心坚固，已经断食六日，都非常担心，于是他们一起向须提王建议：「王子已六日未食，若继续如此，命恐不保。请国王答应王子的请求吧，至少未来您还能与王子相见啊！」须提王听了大臣们的建议后，终于答应了护国王子出家的请求。
护国王子即刻前去求见佛陀，以至诚恭敬之心顶礼佛陀，恳求出家。世尊应许，说道：「善来比丘，须发自落，法服着身。」话一说完，护国王子即现比丘相。精进用功的护国比丘不久即证阿罗汉果，不仅具足三明六通，亦得八种解脱，诸天天人及世人无不对其敬仰赞叹。
大众比丘见到护国比丘如此殊胜的果报，都非常欢喜赞叹，于是请示佛陀：「世尊，护国比丘于过去生如何植福，能够生于帝王之家，且出家不久，即证得阿罗汉？请世尊慈悲为大众开示。」于是佛陀为诸大比丘开示前世宿因。
无量世以前，波罗奈国的国王毗提发起战争，与邻国须提王打仗，结果须提王打了败仗，带着军队沿路撤退，躲避毘提王的追兵。军队来到一片荒地，不但没有食物，也找不到水源，在当时炎热的气候下，所有的人都几乎饥渴而死。就在大家绝望之际，须提王突然想起，不远处即是辟支佛的住所，于是前往求救。辟支佛不但带领须提王及他的军队到一片水草地，解决饥渴之患，还指引他们回家的路。
若非辟支佛的指引，所有的军队恐怕早已在荒地中饥渴而亡。回到国内的须提王非常感念辟支佛的恩德，为报佛恩，须提王准备种种上妙饮食，恭请辟支佛到皇宫应供。供养毕，辟支佛即示现涅盘。当时国王、大臣及后宫的嫔妃、仕女们无不感到哀伤而号啼哭泣，难过不已。为了感念佛恩，国王于是造塔供养佛舍利，让大众瞻仰礼拜。
佛陀告诉大众：「过去的须提王，就是现在的护国比丘，因为至诚的供养功德，生生世世不堕地狱、畜生、饿鬼道中，于天上人间享受尊荣豪贵；并于今世跟随我出家修行，得道证果。」诸比丘闻佛所说，皆信守教诲，欢喜奉行。

Prince Huguo’s Cause for Renunciation and Liberation
One day, while the Buddha was meditating beneath a Tula tree outside the city of the Kingdom of Kubila, He perceived that the causes and conditions for Prince Huguo’s liberation had matured. Therefore, He led a great assembly of bhikkhus into the city to teach and transform beings.
As soon as the Buddha entered the city, the earth trembled in six ways, and countless marvelous flowers rained down from the sky. Rays of compassionate light radiated from the Buddha’s body, illuminating every corner of the city without distinction. Through the power of this Buddha-light, the blind regained sight, the deaf recovered hearing, the mute could speak, and those who were lame could walk freely. Filled with joy, the people gathered along the streets to welcome the Buddha’s arrival.
Inside the royal palace, Prince Huguo saw this incomparable radiance and was filled with admiration. Following the light, he came before the Buddha. When he beheld the Buddha’s majestic appearance, perfect deportment, and brilliance shining like hundreds of thousands of suns illuminating all directions, he was overwhelmed with joy and immediately bowed at the Buddha’s feet.
The Buddha compassionately expounded to the prince the Four Noble Truths—suffering, its cause, its cessation, and the path. Upon hearing the Buddha’s voice of Dharma, Prince Huguo’s mind opened to understanding, and he immediately attained the fruit of Stream-Entry (Sotāpanna). He then developed a firm aspiration to leave home and become a monk.
After returning to the palace, Prince Huguo happily recounted everything to the king and praised the inconceivable virtues of the Buddha.
He said:
“If the Buddha had not renounced the household life, He would certainly have become a Wheel-Turning Sage King, possessing the power to rule the entire world. Wherever He went, the Seven Treasures would accompany Him, and nothing could obstruct Him. Yet despite possessing such immeasurable merit, the Buddha renounced worldly glory and wealth to pursue spiritual cultivation. How much more should I, whose merit and wisdom are far inferior to the Buddha’s, seek the path of renunciation? Therefore, I respectfully request that Father allow me to follow the great Buddha and enter the monastic life.”
Upon hearing this request, the king covered his ears and refused to listen, rejecting Prince Huguo’s wish to renounce the world.
Seeing the king’s reaction, the prince lamented his own lack of merit and sincerely repented. From that day forward, he refused all food and devoted himself to contemplating the Buddha’s teachings. One day passed, then two, until by the sixth day he still had not eaten. Yet his determination to renounce the world remained unshakable.
The ministers became deeply worried when they saw that the prince had fasted for six days. Together they advised King Xuti:
“The prince has already gone six days without food. If this continues, his life may be in danger. Please grant his request. At the very least, you may still see him again in the future.”
Moved by the ministers’ counsel, King Xuti finally consented to Prince Huguo’s request to become a monk.
The prince immediately went to see the Buddha. With utmost sincerity and reverence, he bowed before Him and requested ordination.
The World-Honored One replied:
“Come, bhikkhu.”
As soon as these words were spoken, the prince’s hair fell away naturally, monastic robes appeared upon his body, and he became a fully ordained monk.
Bhikkhu Huguo practiced diligently and before long attained Arhatship. He became endowed with the Threefold Knowledge, the Six Supernormal Powers, and the Eight Liberations. Gods and humans alike revered and praised him.
The bhikkhus, seeing Huguo’s extraordinary attainment, rejoiced greatly and asked the Buddha:
“World-Honored One, what wholesome causes did Bhikkhu Huguo plant in past lives that enabled him to be born into a royal family and attain Arhatship so quickly after renouncing the world? We ask the World-Honored One to compassionately explain this to us.”
The Buddha then revealed the karmic causes from the distant past.
Countless ages ago, King Viti of the Kingdom of Benares waged war against the neighboring King Xuti. King Xuti was defeated and retreated with his army while fleeing pursuit.
The army entered a desolate wilderness where there was neither food nor water. Under the scorching heat, everyone was on the verge of dying from hunger and thirst.
Just as all hope seemed lost, King Xuti remembered that a Pratyekabuddha lived nearby. He went to seek help.
The Pratyekabuddha not only guided the king and his soldiers to a place rich in water and grass, relieving their suffering, but also showed them the way back home.
Without the Pratyekabuddha’s guidance, the entire army would likely have perished in the wasteland.
After safely returning to his kingdom, King Xuti felt profound gratitude toward the Pratyekabuddha. To repay this kindness, he prepared exquisite food and respectfully invited the Pratyekabuddha to receive offerings in the royal palace.
After accepting the offering, the Pratyekabuddha manifested Nirvana.
The king, his ministers, the royal consorts, and palace attendants were all overcome with sorrow and wept bitterly.
To honor the Pratyekabuddha’s kindness, the king built a stupa to enshrine his relics so that people could venerate and pay homage to them.
The Buddha then told the assembly:
“That King Xuti of the past was none other than the present Bhikkhu Huguo. Because of the sincere merit generated through those offerings, he has never fallen into the realms of hell beings, animals, or hungry ghosts throughout countless lifetimes. Instead, he has enjoyed honor and prosperity among gods and humans. In this present life, he has followed Me into the monastic life, attained the Path, and realized the Fruit.”
After hearing the Buddha’s explanation, all the bhikkhus faithfully accepted His teaching and joyfully put it into practice.
