Five Mental Attitudes of an Awakened Person

The mental attitudes of an awakened person are not fixed personality traits nor elevated status markers. They are natural modes of mind that arise when awareness stabilizes and clinging loosens. These attitudes support one another and can be observed, tested, and cultivated in everyday life.

1. Clarity: Seeing Things as They Are

1. Perceiving facts directly

Free from projection and bias.

2. Discerning without judgment

Discernment guides action, not division.

3. Continuity of awareness

Unaffected by circumstances.

2. Equanimity: Reduced Self-Centeredness

1. Neither inflated nor diminished

Self-worth not defined by outcomes.

2. Neither favoritism nor rejection

Relationships are more balanced.

3. Non-fixation on positions

Views are used, not inhabited.

3. Patience and Forbearance: Allowing Without Avoidance

1. Coexisting with discomfort

No urgency to eliminate feeling.

2. Not driven by emotion

Emotions are seen, not obeyed.

3. Stable yet flexible

Inner strength without rigidity.

4. Compassion: Understanding Before Judgment

1. Sensitivity to suffering

Without indifference.

2. Help without superiority

No ego reinforcement.

3. Appropriate action

Compassion expresses itself wisely.

5. Ease: Non-Attachment to Gain and Loss

1. Not defined by results

Effort without fixation.

2. Not clinging to experience

Pleasant and unpleasant pass freely.

3. Living in the present

Ease arises from presence.

6. How These Attitudes Interconnect

1. Clarity supports equanimity

Seeing clearly reduces ego grip.

2. Equanimity nurtures compassion

Less bias allows understanding.

3. Forbearance protects ease

Tolerance enables freedom.

7. Clearing Misunderstandings

1. Thoughts still arise

They are no longer owned.

2. Emotions still appear

They no longer dominate.

3. Learning continues

Without stubborn attachment.

8. Cultivating These Attitudes in Daily Life

1. Practice clarity in conflict

See first, respond later.

2. Practice equanimity in relationships

Loosen fixed roles.

3. Practice patience under pressure

Return to body and breath.

4. Practice compassion through understanding

Act after seeing conditions.

5. Practice ease amid change

Allow reality as it unfolds.

Conclusion

The five attitudes of awakening are not extraordinary attributes but the natural expression of mature awareness: clarity reveals truth, equanimity softens ego, patience holds discomfort, compassion leads with understanding, and ease frees life from fixation on gain and loss. When these attitudes are repeatedly verified and nourished in daily life, awakening ceases to be an abstract idea and becomes a stable, gentle, and lucid way of living.
