Sitting Meditation
Non-Dual Stillness and Clarity in Meditative Absorption
“Non-dual stillness and clarity” describes the mature quality of meditation in which calm stability and clear knowing are not two separate states. Stillness does not dull awareness, and clarity does not agitate the mind. In genuine realization, tranquility and illumination function together within the same nature of awareness.
1. What Is Stillness?
1. Not blankness
Awareness is not shut down.
2. Freedom from disturbance
Mental noise subsides.
3. Stable presence
The mind no longer follows objects.
2. What Is Clarity?
1. Not conceptual analysis
Understanding is not inferential.
2. Immediate knowing
What appears is known directly.
3. Comprehensive awareness
Body, feeling, mind, and environment are all known.
3. Why “Non-Dual” Is Emphasized
1. Stillness alone risks dullness
Calm without clarity becomes heaviness.
2. Clarity alone risks restlessness
Knowing without stability becomes scattered.
3. Non-duality defines right concentration
Calm and clear simultaneously.
4. Characteristics of Non-Dual Stillness and Clarity
1. No forced effort
Neither suppression nor maintenance.
2. Middle-way balance
Neither tight nor loose.
3. Natural continuity
Unbroken across changing conditions.
5. Developmental Integration
1. Early emphasis on calm
Settling distraction.
2. Middle emphasis on clarity
Maintaining awareness within calm.
3. Mature non-separation
Stillness is clarity; clarity is stillness.
6. Three Practical Entry Points
1. Breath as anchor
Stability with awareness.
2. Body as ground
Subtle sensations known without interference.
3. Awareness as reference
Staying with the fact of knowing itself.
7. Common Imbalances and Adjustments
1. Correcting excess stillness
Reintroduce clear knowing.
2. Correcting excess clarity
Return to settling and grounding.
3. Correcting state-chasing
Release comparison; return to immediacy.
8. Relationship to Insight
1. Stillness stabilizes observation
Prevents disturbance.
2. Clarity reveals structure
Impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, non-self.
3. Insight remains inseparable from calm
Wisdom matures within stability.
9. Expression in Daily Life
1. Calm and clear action
Effective without agitation.
2. Stable awareness in emotion
Feelings known without overwhelm.
3. Clear presence in relationships
Responsive without reactivity.
Conclusion
Non-dual stillness and clarity in meditation are not special attainments but the natural expression of mature awareness: calm without dullness, clarity without agitation. When practice no longer oscillates between quietness and knowing, concentration becomes alive and insight becomes grounded. From this unity, meditation extends beyond sitting and continues seamlessly through all activities of daily life.
