Sitting Meditation
Three Types of Light Phenomena in Deep Concentration
As meditation deepens, some practitioners experience various forms of inner light. These are not physical lights seen by the eyes, but mental phenomena arising from collected and clarified awareness. Understanding their origin, types, and function prevents attachment and allows concentration to support insight rather than become an obstacle.
1. What Are Light Phenomena?
1. Not external visual stimuli
They are not produced by physical light.
2. Not mystical revelation
They arise naturally from mental clarity.
3. Conditioned meditative phenomena
They appear and disappear with concentration.
2. Conditions for Their Appearance
1. Gathered attention
Distraction subsides.
2. Emotional settling
Coarse agitation fades.
3. Continuity of awareness
Concentration matures.
3. First Type: Point-like or Flashing Light
1. Characteristics
Dots, sparks, brief flashes.
2. Stage
Often early in deeper concentration.
3. Mental correlation
Attention is focusing but not yet stable.
4. Second Type: Sustained and Gentle Light
1. Characteristics
Even, warm, steady luminosity.
2. Stage
With strengthened concentration.
3. Mental correlation
Ease, stability, and clarity coexist.
5. Third Type: Pervasive or Boundless Luminosity
1. Characteristics
Not a shape, but pervasive knowing.
2. Stage
Deep concentration with emerging insight.
3. Mental correlation
Minimal self-reference, broad equanimity.
6. Shared Nature of All Three
1. Arise due to conditions
They fade when conditions change.
2. Impermanent
Not continuously present.
3. Not liberation itself
Still within arising and passing.
7. Common Misunderstandings
1. Taking light as awakening
Mistaking phenomena for realization.
2. Chasing light
Destabilizes concentration.
3. Rejecting non-light phases
Creates comparison and disappointment.
8. Right Attitude in Practice
1. Know them as they arise
Simple recognition.
2. Neither seek nor resist
Maintain balance.
3. Return to the primary object
Let practice remain grounded.
9. Light and Insight
1. Observe arising and passing
Seeing impermanence.
2. Observe non-self
Light does not define the practitioner.
3. Return to ordinary clarity
Luminosity fades; awareness remains.
Conclusion
Light phenomena in deep concentration are natural companions of mental unification, not the destination of practice. Whether appearing as brief flashes, steady glow, or pervasive luminosity, all are conditioned and transient. When met without grasping and examined with insight, concentration remains steady and becomes a reliable bridge toward clarity and liberation.
