Dharma Talk

Venerable Anuruddha

Among the ten great disciples of the Buddha, Venerable Anuruddha was honored as the foremost in the divine eye. What practitioners admire most in him is his determination to sacrifice himself for the Dharma, his steadfast repentance and sense of shame, and the causes and conditions through which he attained awakening and realization.

Before going forth, Anuruddha was a prince of the Śākya clan. Because in past lives he had made offerings to a Pratyekabuddha, he was reborn life after life with great wealth and honor, lacking nothing in food, clothing, shelter, or livelihood. Yet, despite these blessings, the prince, endowed with deep roots of goodness, did not indulge in the pleasures of the five desires. After hearing the Buddha’s teaching, he resolved to leave worldly life and enter the monastic path.

After ordination, Anuruddha diligently cultivated the path, remaining humble and free from arrogance. Although his dignified appearance subjected him several times to the temptation of women, he remained unmoved and used the water of wisdom to extinguish their desires. Such concentration and cultivation earned him widespread respect and praise at a young age. However, on one occasion while the Buddha was teaching the assembly, Anuruddha inadvertently dozed off. Seeing this, the Buddha reproached and instructed him: “If you indulge in sleep like this, you may fall into the realm of snails and clams. Once you fall asleep, who knows how long it will be before you again hear the name of the Buddha or the teaching of the Dharma?”

Hearing the Buddha’s reproach, Anuruddha felt deep remorse. With tears streaming down his face, he gave rise to great shame and made a vow that from then on he would practice diligently and never close his eyes again. As days passed, his eyesight gradually worsened until he was nearly blind. When the Buddha learned of this, he summoned the great physician Jīvaka to treat him. After examination, Jīvaka told him, “If you do not sleep and allow your eyes to rest, you will certainly go blind!” Even the Buddha personally advised him, “Anuruddha, all things require nourishment to be sustained. Nirvāṇa is sustained by non-negligence, and the faculty of the eye is sustained by sleep. You should rest and sleep.” Yet Anuruddha persisted in his original vow and refused to close his eyes. After seven days, he indeed became blind, but he continued to practice diligently without regret or sorrow.

One day, since Anuruddha could not mend his own robe, he called out loudly, “Is there anyone who wishes to gain merit? Come help me thread a needle and mend my robe!” At that moment, the compassionate Buddha personally came to his room and said, “I will gain merit.” Recognizing the Buddha’s voice, Anuruddha was greatly astonished. He immediately rose, respectfully paid homage, and asked, “World-Honored One, you already possess immeasurable merit—why do you still wish to cultivate more?” The Buddha replied, “Who would ever consider having too much merit?” Hearing this, Anuruddha thought, “If even the Buddha is so diligent in cultivating merit, how much more should we ordinary beings strive?” Filled with gratitude for the Buddha’s compassion, he listened as the Buddha instructed him in the practice of the “Vajra Samādhi of Delight in Illumination.” Because of his single-minded concentration, Anuruddha immediately attained the divine eye, seeing throughout the ten directions without obstruction, and realized the fruit of ara
