不肯脱帽听法的国王
从前，有一位比丘于波罗梨国的鸡头园升座说法，数千万人围绕左右，聆听开示，无不法喜充满。
当时法律规定：入寺听法及礼佛者，皆须脱帽，以表示恭敬。结果，国王因头发稀少，又长了脓疮，所以仗着自己的权势，裹着头巾、穿著鞋子，就想要进去听法。国王粗声地告诉比丘：「赶快为我说法！」比丘回答；「佛陀教敕，开示时若有人不肯脱鞋，不可为其说法。」国王听了虽然很生气，但还是忍下瞋心来把鞋脱了。怀着怒气的国王接着说：「快点说法，让我欢喜，否则我就把你的头砍了。」比丘回答：「佛陀也有规定，不可为不脱帽者说法。」国王听了火冒三丈：「你竟然敢侮辱我！好，我今天就脱帽听你说法，如果你不能解答我的疑惑，就将你斩成三段。」这时比丘为国王说了一个偈子：
「不以不净意，亦及瞋怒人，
欲得知法者，三耶三佛说。
诸有余贡高，心意极清净，
能舍伤害怀，乃得闻正法。」
国王听了之后，感到非常惭愧，于是五体投地礼拜忏悔，请求比丘灭除自己的身口意过失。国王长跪合掌：「尊者，您的修行真是高深，竟能洞悉我的心念而说出这首偈子。」比丘回答：「这首偈子其实是如来很久以前说过的，不是现在才说的。」国王心想：「佛陀真的是太有智慧了，那么久远之前就知道未来有像我这样的人，心怀瞋恚，以不敬心听法。从今以后，我绝对不会再犯同样的错误了。」于是，比丘为国王开示佛法大要，国王因此心垢灭除，通达法理，证得初果，从此对佛法信受不已。

The King Who Refused to Remove His Hat While Listening to the Dharma
Long ago, a bhikkhu ascended the seat to teach the Dharma at Jitou Garden in the kingdom of Poluoli. Tens of thousands of people gathered around to listen, all filled with joy in the Dharma.
At that time, the law required that anyone entering a monastery to listen to the Dharma or pay homage to the Buddha must remove their hat as a sign of respect. However, the king, whose hair was sparse and whose head was covered with sores, relied on his authority. He wrapped his head in a cloth and wore shoes as he entered, intending to listen to the teaching. In a rough voice, the king ordered the bhikkhu, “Hurry and teach the Dharma for me!” The bhikkhu replied, “The Buddha has instructed that if someone refuses to remove their shoes, one should not teach the Dharma to them.” Though angered, the king restrained himself and removed his shoes.
Still filled with anger, the king said, “Speak the Dharma quickly and make me pleased, otherwise I will cut off your head.” The bhikkhu replied, “The Buddha has also laid down that the Dharma should not be taught to one who does not remove his hat.” The king became furious and said, “You dare insult me! Very well, I will remove my hat and listen to your teaching today. But if you cannot resolve my doubts, I will cut you into three pieces.” At that moment, the bhikkhu spoke this verse to the king:
“With an impure mind, or one filled with anger,
One cannot attain understanding of the Dharma—
So has the Buddha taught.
Those who abandon arrogance and pride,
Whose minds are utterly pure,
Who relinquish thoughts of harming others—
Only they can hear the true Dharma.”
After hearing this, the king felt deeply ashamed. He prostrated himself fully in repentance and requested the bhikkhu to help him eliminate the faults of body, speech, and mind. Kneeling with palms joined, the king said, “Venerable one, your cultivation is truly profound—you were able to know my thoughts and speak this verse.” The bhikkhu replied, “This verse was spoken by the Tathāgata long ago; it is not newly composed.”
The king thought, “The Buddha is truly wise. Long ago he already knew that in the future there would be someone like me, harboring anger and listening to the Dharma with disrespect. From now on, I will never make such mistakes again.” Thereupon, the bhikkhu expounded the essential teachings of the Dharma to the king. The king’s defilements were extinguished, he understood the truth, and attained the fruit of stream-entry. From then on, he held firm faith in the Buddha’s teaching.
