The Supreme Sage Sacrifices His Body to Seek the Dharma
One day, Bodhisattva Jingwei respectfully asked Śākyamuni Buddha about the causes and conditions of his past cultivation. The Buddha then explained the story of the Supreme Sage who sacrificed his body in order to seek the Dharma.
In a distant kalpa long ago, many sages diligently practiced in the mountains and forests, widely cultivating loving-kindness. One day, the Supreme Sage reflected: “Although possessing great compassion can benefit sentient beings, only by deeply entering the scriptures, hearing and contemplating the Dharma, and fully cultivating wisdom can one truly help sentient beings eliminate afflictions and establish correct views.” Wishing to use the true Dharma to transform beings, the Supreme Sage actively traveled among large and small towns in search of a good teacher skilled in expounding the essential teachings.
The Supreme Sage’s resolve to seek the Dharma for the sake of sentient beings shook the heavenly demon. One day, a voice of the heavenly demon came from the sky: “Supreme Sage, do you wish to obtain the verses of Dharma spoken by the Buddha? If you are willing to strip off your own skin to use as paper, draw your blood to use as ink, cut your bones to make a pen, and write down this verse, I will then speak the Dharma for you.”
Upon hearing this, the Supreme Sage thought: “For countless kalpas in the past, this body of flesh and blood has endured the suffering of saṃsāra, yet has never truly benefited sentient beings. Today, encountering such a rare and supreme condition, I should not begrudge my life, but abandon this fragile body to obtain the wondrous Dharma.”
Thus, the Supreme Sage gave rise to a joyful and vigorous mind, immediately stripped off his skin to use as paper, drew his blood to use as ink, cut his bones to make a pen, joined his palms, looked up to the sky, and implored the heavenly demon to speak the Dharma. The demon had originally intended to harass the sage and obstruct his seeking of the Dharma, but upon seeing the Supreme Sage’s willingness to sacrifice his body for the Dharma, the demon was greatly disappointed and promptly departed.
Watching the demon leave, the sage still prayed to the heavens: “Today I sincerely seek the Dharma, sparing not my life, stripping my skin for paper, drawing my blood for ink, cutting my bones for a pen, all with the sole thought of sentient beings. This vow is true and not false. I earnestly ask that all beings of great compassion who can expound the Dharma in all worlds, upon hearing this sincere resolve, compassionately manifest themselves.”
As the sage made this prayer, in a Buddha land of another world thirty-two kṣetras away to the east, King Buddha Pure Name of the Universally Stainless Buddha Land immediately appeared before the sage, radiating pure and brilliant light. In an instant, his compassionate radiance shone upon the Supreme Sage, and the intense pain of flaying skin and cutting bone vanished without a trace; the flesh torn and bleeding was restored as before.
King Buddha Pure Name then expounded for the sage the samādhi that gathers all merits. Upon hearing the Dharma, the Supreme Sage attained unobstructed eloquence, and with this wisdom widely proclaimed the wondrous Dharma for sentient beings, enabling immeasurable beings to enter the noble paths of the Three Vehicles. The sage compassionately taught and liberated beings in this way for a thousand years, and at the end of his life was reborn in the Universally Stainless Buddha Land of King Buddha Pure Name.
Śākyamuni Buddha told Bodhisattva Jingwei: “The Supreme Sage of the past is none other than myself today. From this we know that if someone respectfully seeks the Dharma, the Buddhas of the ten directions will never abandon that being; at any time and in any place, one will be able to personally behold the Buddha.”
