Sumā Offers Thread and Receives a Prediction of Buddhahood
In the past, when the Buddha was teaching the Dharma at Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Grove in Sāvatthī, there lived in the city a tailor named Sumā. Sumā was extremely poor and lived in great hardship, relying only on sewing clothes for others to maintain a simple livelihood.
No one knew how long such a life had continued. One day, Sumā suddenly felt deeply moved and thought, “The reason I am so poor in this life is because I did not practice generosity in the past. Such a life is truly painful. If in this lifetime I do not strive to make offerings and cultivate merit, in future lives I will only become even more destitute.” With this thought, Sumā made a firm resolve from the depths of his heart to work even harder. Even if what he possessed was extremely meager, he would still give according to his ability to accumulate merit and virtue.
Therefore, Sumā took the little money left at home and went into the city to buy some thread. By coincidence, on the way back home, he saw from a distance the dignified Buddha leading many great bhikkhus into the city on alms round. Sumā felt great joy, hurried forward, and with the utmost sincerity offered the newly purchased thread in his hands to the Buddha. The compassionate Buddha accepted the thread and, before the assembly, used it to mend a tear in his own robe. Witnessing this scene, Sumā was deeply moved. Joyfully he bowed to the Buddha and recited a verse:
“Though what is given is small, it meets a field of great merit.
Having offered it to the World-Honored One,
I vow that in the future I shall become a Buddha.
I will ferry across countless living beings,
Their numbers beyond measure.
Greatly majestic World-Honored One,
May you bear witness to this.”
The Buddha gave Sumā a prediction, saying, “Because of the merit of your single-minded and sincere offering, in a future life you will become a Buddha, named Shi-Yan, liberating immeasurable beings.”
Upon hearing the Buddha’s prediction, Sumā’s faith grew even firmer, and before the Buddha he made a great vow: “May the merit of this offering, in future lives, become eyes for beings who are blind in darkness; a refuge for those without refuge; protection for those without protection; liberation for those without liberation; safety for those without safety; and for those not yet entered into Nirvana, may they attain Nirvana.”
The Buddha smiled, and at that moment five-colored rays of light radiated from his mouth. The auspicious light circled the Buddha three times to the right and finally returned into the crown of his head. At that time Ānanda asked the Buddha, “What causes the World-Honored One to smile?” The Buddha then explained to the assembly the causes and conditions of Sumā’s offering of thread and his future attainment of Buddhahood. After hearing this, the great bhikkhus felt great joy, accepted it with faith, and practiced accordingly.
