梵志丧女 焉知非福
一天，佛陀在舍卫国祇树给孤独园为弟子们开示时，有位梵志失魂落魄地来到精舍求见佛陀。原来这名梵志有个才十四、五岁的女儿，相貌端正、聪明无碍，却因为突然染上重病而命终；祸不单行的他，赖以维生的田地好不容易等到麦子成熟，却又被一场大火烧得精光。梵志为此苦恼不已，忧愁恍惚，甚至到了失去理智的地步。后来，梵志听人说：「佛陀是一位大圣人，为人天导师，时常讲经说法，为人排忧解难。」于是梵志特地前往精舍，拜见佛陀。
梵志来到佛陀面前，恭敬地问讯礼拜、长跪合掌说道：「佛陀，我没有儿子，只有一个掌上明珠，我非常地疼爱她，拥有女儿的幸福让我什么忧愁都忘记了。但是，前阵子她却突然生重病过世，留下我一人，我实在无法克服心中的悲伤，希望世尊能慈悲开示，化除我忧伤烦恼的心结。」
佛陀为其开示：「世间上有四件事是无法长久的：一、看似不变的事物必会遭遇无常变化。二、世间的富贵必会消弭成为贫贱。三、有相聚必有别离之日。四、再勇猛强健的人终不免一死。」接着，佛陀又说了一首偈子：「常者皆尽，高者必堕，合会有离，生者有死。」
梵志听完偈子后心生法喜，即刻化解了丧女的哀痛，并且希望能跟随佛陀出家修行。因为佛陀的威德力，梵志当下须发自落，成为一位庄严的比丘；日后精进用功，思惟无常之理，证得阿罗汉果。

The Brahmin Who Lost His Daughter — Who Knows It May Not Be a Blessing
One day, while the Buddha was teaching his disciples at Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Grove in Sāvatthī, a brahmin arrived at the monastery in a distraught and absent-minded state, seeking an audience with the Buddha. This brahmin had a daughter of only fourteen or fifteen years of age. She was graceful in appearance and intelligent without obstruction, yet she suddenly fell gravely ill and passed away.
Misfortune did not come alone; the fields upon which he depended for his livelihood had finally reached harvest, but were completely burned by a great fire. The brahmin was overwhelmed with anguish, lost in sorrow and confusion, even to the point of losing his reason. Later, he heard people say, “The Buddha is a great sage, a teacher of gods and humans, who often expounds the Dharma and relieves people of their suffering.” Therefore, the brahmin went to the monastery to meet the Buddha.
Coming before the Buddha, the brahmin respectfully greeted and paid homage, then knelt with palms joined and said, “World-Honored One, I have no sons, only one beloved daughter. I cherished her deeply, and the happiness of having her made me forget all worries. But not long ago she suddenly became gravely ill and died, leaving me alone. I cannot overcome the grief in my heart. I beg the World-Honored One to compassionately teach me and dissolve the knot of sorrow and affliction within me.”
The Buddha taught him, “In this world there are four things that cannot endure forever: first, what appears unchanging will inevitably encounter impermanence and transformation. Second, worldly wealth and honor will surely decline into poverty and lowliness. Third, wherever there is meeting, there will be a day of separation. Fourth, even the strongest and bravest person cannot escape death.” Then the Buddha spoke a verse: “What is constant will come to an end; what is high will surely fall; where there is union there will be separation; what is born must die.”
After hearing the verse, the brahmin felt joy in the Dharma. His grief over losing his daughter was immediately resolved, and he wished to follow the Buddha into homelessness and cultivate the path. Through the Buddha’s spiritual power, his hair and beard fell away at once, and he became a dignified bhikkhu. Later, practicing diligently and contemplating the principle of impermanence, he attained the fruit of arahantship.
