The Five Methods of Mental Calming: Ways to Subdue Defilements
The Five Methods of Mental Calming are a set of contemplative practices designed to address different dominant defilements. Their guiding principle is skillful matching: instead of forcing the mind to “let go,” each method provides an appropriate object of contemplation so the mind can settle. When the mind rests correctly, defilements lose their support and naturally subside.
1. Contemplation of Impurity: Countering Desire
1. How desire operates
Idealizing bodies and sense objects.
2. Core of the practice
Seeing the body as it actually is.
3. Result
Craving weakens and balance returns.
2. Contemplation of Loving-Kindness and Compassion: Countering Anger
1. Root of anger
Seeing others as threats or obstacles.
2. Core of the practice
Recognizing beings as condition-driven.
3. Result
Hostility softens and warmth arises.
3. Contemplation of Conditionality (Dependent Arising): Countering Delusion
1. Expression of delusion
Misunderstanding causes and effects.
2. Core of the practice
Seeing phenomena as conditionally arisen.
3. Result
Clarity increases and confusion diminishes.
4. Mindfulness of Breathing with Counting: Countering Restlessness
1. Nature of restlessness
Attention cannot stay with one object.
2. Core of the practice
Using breath counting to gather the mind.
3. Result
Stability develops and focus strengthens.
5. Recollection Practice (such as Recollection of the Buddha): Countering Dullness
1. Nature of dullness
Mental heaviness and lack of clarity.
2. Core of the practice
A bright, continuous object lifts awareness.
3. Result
Alertness and clarity return.
6. The Unifying Principle: Calm First, Insight Later
1. Settling defilements first
Preventing further proliferation.
2. Cultivating insight afterward
Seeing clearly from stability.
3. Individual adaptation
Methods are applied flexibly.
7. Clearing Common Misunderstandings
1. Not limited to one method
Defilements change with conditions.
2. Not for lifelong fixation
Once calm, other practices follow.
3. Not suppression
But redirection of attention.
8. Applying the Five Methods in Daily Life
1. When desire arises, contemplate impurity
Reduce fantasy.
2. When anger arises, cultivate compassion
Understand before responding.
3. When restless, return to the breath
Reconnect with the present.
4. When dull, uplift mindfulness
Restore clarity.
Conclusion
The strength of the Five Methods of Mental Calming lies in their practicality: they do not demand the immediate absence of defilements, but show how to give the mind a skillful resting place when defilements arise. As attention is guided correctly, defilements lose their fuel and subside on their own. Calm comes first, insight follows naturally, and practice becomes a process of intelligent transformation rather than inner struggle.
