The Grateful Goose King
Long ago, near the city of Bārāṇasī, there was a large pond. In this pond lived many creatures—fish, turtles, geese, ducks, and wild geese. Among them, the leader of the geese was named Zhiguo, who led a flock of five hundred geese.
One day, a hunter came to the pond and set up nets to catch the geese. While the Goose King was searching for food, he accidentally became trapped in the net. The Goose King thought, “If I cry out now, my companions will be frightened and flee, and they will not be able to eat. It is better to wait until they are full before warning them.”
After the geese had nearly finished eating, the Goose King then called out loudly, “Everyone, be careful! A hunter has come to capture us. I have been caught in the net—quickly escape!” Hearing the warning, the flock panicked and hurriedly flew away. Only one goose, named Suma, could not bear to leave the Goose King behind.
The Goose King said to Suma, “I am already trapped. You should take my place as king and lead the flock.” Suma replied sorrowfully, “I cannot take your place. You have always cared for us—how could I abandon you in your time of danger? I would rather die with you than escape alone… Let us first find a way to free you from this net—that is the most important thing now.” However, despite trying many methods, Suma was unable to rescue the Goose King.
After a while, the hunter returned to check his catch. Suma anxiously said to him, “The Goose King’s flesh is no different from mine. I am willing to die in his place—please release him!” Deeply moved, the hunter said, “Your loyalty and righteousness, being willing to sacrifice your life to save the Goose King, truly inspire admiration. Not only will I not kill you, I will also release the Goose King.” With that, he untied the net and freed the Goose King.
However, the Goose King did not immediately leave. He softly said to Suma, “He is a compassionate man who has spared our lives. We must find a way to repay his kindness.” Seeing that they did not fly away, the hunter asked, “Is there something else? I have already released the Goose King—why do you not leave?” The Goose King replied, “We are discussing how to repay your great kindness.” The hunter laughed and said, “Thank you for your intention, but you are only birds—how could you repay me?” The Goose King said, “We will take you to see King Brahmadatta of Bārāṇasī, and I will ask him to repay you on our behalf.”
Because the Goose King was acquainted with Brahmadatta, after hearing the explanation, the king immediately rewarded the hunter with many treasures. After receiving these gifts, the hunter was deeply moved by the Goose King’s gratitude and sense of repayment. Not only did he give the treasures away to the poor, but he also vowed never to hunt again.
