Rejoicing in and Praising Virtue Benefits Oneself and Others

One day, the Buddha, accompanied by his constant retinue of 1,250 disciples, traveled to the city of Śrāvastī to spread the Dharma. Before the Buddha had even entered the city, five hundred celestial beings had already sent fragrant breezes through every street and alley, causing filth, foul odors, and impurities to disappear into the earth. Moreover, they showered the roads with fragrant rain and scattered flowers as offerings, filling the entire city with purity and delightful fragrance.

When the king, ministers, and people of Śrāvastī witnessed these auspicious signs, they knew that the Buddha was about to arrive. Immediately, everyone laid aside their work. Some joyfully swept the streets, scattered flowers, or burned incense. Others spread cloth upon the ground, loosened their hair to cover the path, raised banners and canopies, or performed music and dances to welcome the Buddha’s arrival.

As the Buddha and the community of monks entered the city, all the people respectfully joined their palms and gazed with sincere reverence upon the Buddha’s majestic and noble appearance.

At that time, a brahmin was present among the crowd. Although he wished to buy incense and flowers to offer to the Buddha, his poverty prevented him from fulfilling that wish. Therefore, he simply joined the welcoming procession and greeted the Buddha with the purest and most respectful heart.

Upon seeing the Buddha, the brahmin praised him with the following verse:

Your form shines with the radiance of purple-gold,

Illuminated by the thirty-two marks of excellence.

Among all classes of living beings,

None who behold you fail to rejoice.

Seeing the Buddha fills the heart with joy,

  And all sorrow is dispelled.

  One forever crosses the ocean of birth and death;

I bow my head in homage to the Great Peace.

At that moment, the Buddha smiled joyfully. Five-colored rays of light emerged from his mouth, and each ray gave rise to countless further rays. At the tip of every ray appeared a lotus flower made of the seven precious jewels, and upon every lotus sat a manifested Buddha illuminating the ten directions.

The Buddha’s light reached downward to the great hells and upward to the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, leaving no place untouched. Throughout the three-thousand-great-thousand world system, gods and humans who saw the Buddha’s radiance were filled with joy. They left their celestial palaces and came before the Buddha. Some attained liberation by hearing the Dharma, some by seeing the Buddha’s light, some by hearing the manifested Buddhas teach, and others by following the radiance to the Buddha and thereby attaining deliverance.

Even beings suffering in the hell realms temporarily obtained relief. Animals and birds developed wholesome minds and ceased harming one another. Hungry ghosts received hundreds of delicious foods and abandoned thoughts of stinginess.

Countless other beings experienced miraculous benefits: the blind regained sight, the deaf recovered hearing, the mute gained speech, the hunchbacked stood upright, those unable to walk could move freely, the sick were cured of their illnesses, and prisoners confined in jails were released.

Throughout the world system, gods and humans who witnessed these auspicious signs experienced joy and purity of heart. Some attained the first, second, and third fruits of sainthood, while others attained Arhatship. Some realized the state of a Pratyekabuddha, and others generated the aspiration for the Great Vehicle and firmly established themselves on the path to enlightenment without retreat. Those who attained realization and liberation were beyond number.

After illuminating the ten directions, the Buddha’s radiance circled him three times and then entered the space between his eyebrows.

Seeing this extraordinary event, Ānanda knelt with palms joined and asked:

“World-Honored One, the Buddhas and Tathāgatas do not emit rays of light or smile without cause. For what reason has the World-Honored One smiled today? We respectfully ask you to compassionately explain it to us.”

  The Buddha replied to Ānanda:

“Do you see that brahmin who praised the Tathāgata with verses? With an exceedingly pure and sincere heart, he extolled the virtues of the Tathāgata. For the next thirteen kalpas, he will naturally be reborn among gods and humans, never falling into the three evil destinies or the eight difficult states of existence. He will possess a dignified appearance, unobstructed eloquence, and profound wisdom, and he will be praised by all.

“In the future, after leaving home to practice the spiritual life, he will attain the realization of a Pratyekabuddha and will be known as ‘Joyful Delight.’” After hearing the Buddha’s explanation, the assembly was filled with the joy of the Dharma. They sang praises and extolled the extraordinary merits of honoring and praising the Buddha.
