Mind Like Space: All-Pervading Awareness
“Mind like space” does not describe a vast container but points to a fundamental quality of awareness: unconfined by forms, unobstructed by content, and capable of illuminating all experience. Understanding this is not an escape from phenomena, but a way of recognizing awareness as present within every phenomenon.
1. What Is “Mind”?
1. Not a collection of thoughts
Thoughts are objects of awareness.
2. Not identical with emotions
Emotions arise and pass within it.
3. The capacity to know
Whatever occurs is known.
2. What Is “Space”?
1. Space accommodates without filling
Nothing occupies it fully.
2. Space is not opposed to forms
Coming and going do not obstruct it.
3. Space neither rejects nor grasps
It allows without clinging.
3. Why Mind Is Compared to Space
1. Unstained by content
Thoughts leave no trace.
2. Unharmed by change
States shift without damage.
3. No maintenance required
Awareness is naturally present.
4. What “All-Pervading Awareness” Means
1. Awareness does not arise with objects
Objects change; knowing remains functional.
2. Awareness is not confined to inside or outside
Both inner and outer are known.
3. Awareness appears in the ordinary
Not only in deep meditation.
5. Why Awareness Seems Absent
1. Attention is absorbed by objects
The fact of knowing is overlooked.
2. Content is mistaken for self
Awareness recedes from view.
3. Chasing special experiences
The present clarity is ignored.
6. Turning from Obscuration to Presence
1. From content back to knowing
Ask, “What is being known now?”
2. From judgment to seeing
Knowing precedes evaluation.
3. From grasping to openness
Let experience be as it is.
7. Three Practice Points for Realizing “Mind Like Space”
1. Allow everything equally
Sounds, thoughts, sensations.
2. Take awareness itself as the reference
Stay with the fact of knowing.
3. Avoid fabrication and maintenance
Let clarity reveal itself.
8. Distinguishing from Common Misunderstandings
1. Not indifference
Space allows intimacy, not coldness.
2. Not blankness
Awareness is bright and awake.
3. Not denial of functional self
Functions remain; fixation loosens.
9. Living This Understanding
1. Openness amid busyness
Awareness pervades action.
2. Allowance amid emotion
Feelings move without constriction.
3. Spaciousness in relationships
Less positional conflict.
Conclusion
“Mind like space, all-pervading awareness” names a verifiable fact: awareness is not increased or diminished by experience, nor does it come and go with states. When attention relaxes its fixation on thoughts and emotions, awareness naturally reveals itself as open and luminous. Space is not nothingness but boundless allowance; awareness is not a distant attainment but the very knowing of what is happening now. When this is repeatedly confirmed in daily life, the mind moves freely through all circumstances.
