The Twelve Links of Dependent Origination: How the Cycle Operates
The Twelve Links of Dependent Origination are not a mythic account of past and future lives, but a precise analysis of how experience repeats itself and creates the sense of cyclic existence. From ignorance to aging and death, the links describe a conditional chain through which suffering is produced—and through which it can be interrupted. Understanding them is less about memorization and more about recognizing their operation in the present moment.
1. Ignorance: Not Seeing Reality Clearly
1. Unawareness of impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and non-self
Mistaking the changing for the permanent.
2. Misidentifying a self
Clinging and defense follow.
3. Misreading experience
The chain is set in motion.
2. Volitional Formations: Habitual Construction
1. Automatic reactions
Old patterns respond to new moments.
2. Bodily, verbal, and mental tendencies
Choices are shaped by habit.
3. Latent momentum
Energy for continuation accumulates.
3. Consciousness: Directed Knowing
1. Oriented awareness
Not pure knowing, but taking objects.
2. Shaped by formations
Conditioned by past actions.
3. Sense of continuity
The feeling of “I am experiencing” appears.
4. Name-and-Form: Mind–Body Structure
1. Name
Feeling, perception, intention, contact, attention.
2. Form
Body and sensory base.
3. Mutual dependence
The experiential stage is set.
5. Six Sense Bases: Channels of Experience
1. Six faculties
Eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind.
2. Contact becomes possible
Experience has entry points.
3. Selective engagement
Attention filters input.
6. Contact: Meeting of Base, Object, and Consciousness
1. Conditioned occurrence
Arises when conditions meet.
2. A neutral event
Yet pivotal.
3. Experience ignites
The turning point of the chain.
7. Feeling: Pleasant, Unpleasant, Neutral
1. Automatically arising
Not chosen.
2. Fuel for attachment
Especially pleasure and pain.
3. A key point for awareness
Easily observable.
8. Craving: Sticking to Feeling
1. Craving pleasure
Wanting repetition.
2. Aversion to pain
Wanting removal.
3. Delusion toward neutrality
Seeking stimulation.
9. Clinging: Solidifying Attachment
1. Turning craving into “mine”
Identity and views form.
2. Four kinds of clinging
To sense pleasure, views, rules, and self-doctrine.
3. Intensified momentum
The cycle strengthens.
10. Becoming: Directed Existence
1. Psychological and behavioral orientation
“What I am becoming.”
2. Tracks are fixed
Patterns repeat.
3. Conditions for rebirth
The logic completes.
11. Birth: Reappearance of Experience
1. A new identity arises
Stories and roles restart.
2. Pleasure and pain recur
Old patterns continue.
3. Not only physical birth
Also each arising of “I.”
12. Aging and Death: Inevitable Dissolution
1. Whatever is born decays
A structural fact.
2. Accompanied by sorrow and fear
Loss is felt.
3. Without awareness
Ignorance resumes; the cycle continues.
13. Interrupting the Cycle Now: Entering at Feeling
1. Feeling is accessible
Earlier than craving and clinging.
2. Knowing without following
Let feelings arise and pass.
3. The chain loosens naturally
Cyclic momentum diminishes.
Conclusion
The Twelve Links reveal a conditional engine of cyclic experience rather than a fixed fate: ignorance conditions action, action shapes experience, feeling fuels attachment, and attachment propels renewal. When feeling is clearly known without sliding into craving and clinging, the gears slow and the cycle no longer turns by itself; liberation then appears not as an escape from life, but as a natural release within its very structure.
