Seen in the Morning, Gone by Night
One day, Venerable Ānanda went to Śrāvastī to receive alms. From a distance, he saw many men gathered outside the city gate. Some were dancing, some were singing, and others were playing musical instruments. They were all enjoying themselves immensely.
After Venerable Ānanda had finished his alms round and was preparing to leave the city, he discovered that one of the men who had been joyfully singing and dancing that very morning had already died. The others were gathered around him, weeping bitterly in grief. Seeing this scene, Venerable Ānanda thought to himself, “Alas! Impermanence has come so swiftly. When I entered the city for alms this morning, this man was as joyful as a heavenly being, singing and dancing with delight. Yet in such a short time, he has already been summoned by the spirit of impermanence, and his life has come to an end.”
Venerable Ānanda returned to Jetavana Monastery. After paying homage to the Buddha, he respectfully knelt with palms joined and asked, “World-Honored One, today, when I entered the city for alms, I saw many men singing and dancing in the streets, delighting in their pleasures. Yet when I left the city, one of those men had already passed away, and everyone around him was weeping in sorrow. I thought to myself, ‘How can impermanence come so suddenly? When I entered the city this morning, I saw him happily singing and dancing, yet in only a short while, impermanence had already manifested itself. This is truly extraordinary and unlike anything I have ever witnessed before.'”
The Buddha said to Venerable Ānanda, “What is so extraordinary about this? The things I have encountered in the past were even more remarkable than what you saw today.”
The Buddha continued, “Once, when I entered a city on my alms round, I also saw a man singing and dancing in the streets, amusing himself. After I had finished collecting alms and was preparing to return, I still saw that same man immersed in his singing and dancing.”
Venerable Ānanda asked in confusion, “World-Honored One, that seems perfectly ordinary. What is so remarkable about it?”
The Buddha replied, “Life is impermanent and passes with great swiftness, like the wind, which cannot be controlled, much less mastered. Impermanence is the true nature of life, yet sentient beings regard impermanence itself as something extraordinary. When you heard of the first incident, you thought it was remarkable, yet when you heard the second, you thought there was nothing unusual about it. This shows that you have not yet truly understood the principle of impermanence.”
Then, in order to help His disciples fully understand the ultimate truth of impermanence, the Buddha spoke this verse to instruct the assembly, hoping that this Right Dharma would be passed down to future generations so that countless beings might develop right understanding and right view:
”What is seen in the morning may no longer appear by night.
The one seen yesterday may be gone this very evening.
Though I am now young and strong, I have nothing upon which to rely.
The young also die—countless men and women alike.”
