The Buddha Born Beneath the Aśoka Tree

On a night when a gentle breeze softly stirred, a majestic white elephant with six tusks appeared in the dream of Queen Māyā in the city of Kapilavastu. Amid auspicious rays of light and heavenly music, the white elephant slowly descended from Tuṣita Heaven and entered Queen Māyā’s womb. This auspicious and magnificent dream foretold the coming of the Teacher of the Three Realms.

”The Bodhisattva, the Benevolent One, has descended into His mother’s womb. The beings of the Three Realms, both humans and devas, will soon have a refuge!” The news of the Bodhisattva’s conception spread throughout the heavens. The celestial beings were like parched land joyfully awaiting the coming of life-giving nectar. Rejoicing with delight, they praised Him in song through the sky and scattered heavenly flowers. The Four Great Heavenly Kings, protectors of the Dharma, personally assigned the four heavenly princes to guard Queen Māyā day and night, ensuring the safety and well-being of both mother and child.

While abiding in the womb, the Bodhisattva remained naturally pure, like flawless crystal within five-colored radiance, clear and brilliantly luminous. Queen Māyā experienced none of the discomfort or weariness of pregnancy. Instead, she became even more serene and joyful, with her bodily actions, speech, and thoughts becoming pure, gentle, and harmonious.

After ten months had passed, Queen Māyā set out in a palanquin to return to her parents’ home for childbirth. On the journey, she passed through Lumbinī Garden. In the morning light, the garden was fragrant with flowers and grasses, fresh, elegant, and beyond compare. Deeply delighted, Queen Māyā said, “What a beautiful garden! Let us rest here for a while.”

Breathing in the delicate fragrance of the lotus blossoms in the spring-fed pond and listening to the harmonious songs of hundreds of birds, the Queen joyfully strolled through the grove. There stood a luxuriant and flourishing Aśoka tree. Its fresh green branches and tender leaves gracefully bent downward as if to welcome the Holy One. Queen Māyā raised her right hand and gently touched the newly sprouted leaves. At that very moment, the Crown Prince was peacefully born from His mother’s right side. Immediately after His birth, He took seven steps in each of the ten directions, and at every step, precious lotus flowers sprang forth from the earth to support His feet. Pointing His right hand toward the heavens and His left hand toward the earth, the Prince proclaimed with a lion’s roar, “Above the heavens and below the heavens, I alone am the Honored One. The Three Realms are filled with suffering; I shall bring them peace.”

The Teacher of humans and devas was born into the Sahā World. From that moment onward, the dark and deluded world was illuminated with the light of dawn, and all sentient beings gained hope for liberation from the burning afflictions of existence. Instantly, the earth trembled in six different ways. The Nine Dragon Kings spouted streams of fragrant water, alternately warm and cool, to bathe the Prince. Great Brahmā personally held a jeweled parasol, leading the celestial beings as they scattered heavenly flowers, jeweled ornaments, the seven precious treasures, fine incense, and many other celestial offerings throughout the sky, joyfully welcoming the birth of the Buddha.
