The Greedy Devadatta Who Craved Offerings

When the Buddha was teaching the Dharma in Rājagṛha, King Ajātaśatru showed great reverence to Devadatta. Besides building him a magnificent monastery and believing his slanderous words, the king also offered Devadatta many delicious vegetarian meals and precious treasures every day. Many bhikkhus felt this was inappropriate, so they reported the matter to the Buddha. The Buddha admonished the disciples, saying, “Do not envy Devadatta. In his pursuit of fame, gain, and offerings, he has not only slandered me greatly in this life, but did the same in past lives.” The bhikkhus were curious about this and requested the World-Honored One to explain further. Thus, the World-Honored One taught the disciples about Devadatta’s past causes and conditions.

In the past, deep in the mountains of the Kingdom of Benares, there lived two ascetics. The elder ascetic practiced with great diligence, and after many years of devoted cultivation, he attained the five kinds of supernatural powers. The younger ascetic also wished to attain the Way, but he spent his days only in amusement and pleasure, so he gained nothing from his cultivation. At that time, the elder ascetic used his supernatural powers to fly to various places in search of learning. Wherever other ascetics met him, they would present him with various celestial fruits and delicacies. For example, he brought back the finest fragrant rice from Uttarakuru, and sweet fruits from the Jambū tree in Jambudvīpa. One day, he even flew up to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven and brought back delicacies that people in the human world had never tasted before. Whatever offerings the elder ascetic received, he always compassionately shared them with the younger ascetic.

Seeing that the elder ascetic could always come and go freely and accomplish whatever he wished, the younger ascetic became deeply envious and repeatedly begged the elder ascetic to teach him the method of attaining supernatural powers. The elder ascetic said, “If you maintain right mindfulness and practice diligently, you will naturally attain the five kinds of supernatural powers. But if you harbor evil thoughts and seek them for selfish purposes, you will not only endanger others, but also bring bitter consequences upon yourself.” Unable to resist the younger ascetic’s repeated pleas, the elder ascetic finally taught him the Four Dhyānas and the Eight Concentrations. After a period of diligent cultivation, the younger ascetic also attained the five kinds of supernatural powers.

Having finally obtained supernatural powers, the younger ascetic always wanted to show them off everywhere. Therefore, he frequently sought opportunities to go into the city and display all kinds of supernatural abilities before the people. When the people saw him rise into the air and soar through the clouds, they could not help but admire him, and they came one after another to make offerings. As a result, the fame, gain, and offerings he received always exceeded those of the elder ascetic.

The younger ascetic was still not satisfied. He continued to harbor jealousy toward the elder ascetic and slandered his reputation wherever he went. However, the elder ascetic always responded with a gentle smile and paid no attention to it, for he believed that people would eventually come to understand the truth. Later, because the younger ascetic constantly gave rise to anger and harbored evil thoughts, he gradually lost his supernatural powers.

The news that the younger ascetic had lost his supernatural powers quickly spread everywhere. At last, the people saw the truth clearly and, in turn, praised the noble character of the elder ascetic. At the same time, they all condemned the younger ascetic for his narrow-mindedness and low moral character. Therefore, all the people of the city unanimously decided to banish him forever and never allow him to set foot within the kingdom again. The Buddha said, “The elder ascetic at that time was myself, and the younger ascetic was Devadatta.”
