孙陀利相好庄严缘
过去，佛陀在王舍城迦兰陀竹林教化众生时，波斯匿王的夫人生下一名容貌端严、为世少有的男孩，他的双目如拘那罗鸟般地清澈明亮，因此国王为他取名为「拘那罗」。
波斯匿王十分喜爱这个儿子，不仅为他准备镶有珍贵璎珞的上妙衣服，还派人抱着他遍行城内各个聚落；每到一处，国王即高兴地询问：「世上还有人像我的孩子这般庄严的吗？」
一次，有位商人站出来说：「国王！小民有事禀报，请国王保证不会生气，小的才敢直说。」国王答应了商人的请求后，商人说道：「在我的家乡，有一个男孩名叫孙陀利，他的容貌殊胜妙好，就像天人一般，胜过王子百千万倍。更不可思议的是，当他出生时，屋内自然涌出带有香气的泉水，各式珍宝充满其中。」
波斯匿王听了商人的话后，便派人去布达自己将前往会见孙陀利的旨意。聚落的村长知道后，便和大家商议：「国王要来看孙陀利，不如我们先将孙陀利送过去，以表示敬意。」决定后，村民们将孙陀利打扮一番，即送去宫里谒见国王。
波斯匿王见了孙陀利，非常惊讶世间竟有如此端正庄严的人，于是带着他前往精舍拜见佛陀，希望能向佛陀请法，了解此人为何能感得如此殊胜的果报？
孙陀利见到佛陀相好庄严，身上并散发如千百日般的光明，心生恭敬欢喜，即至诚地顶礼佛陀。随后，佛陀为他开示苦、集、灭、道四谛法门，孙陀利当下心开意解，证得须陀洹果。初尝法益的孙陀利祈请能在佛陀座下出家修行，佛陀慈悲应允：「善来比丘，须发自落，法服着身。」孙陀利即现清净僧相；日后不断地精进修行，不久就证得阿罗汉果。
波斯匿王请示佛陀：「世尊，请问什么因缘让孙陀利比丘一出生，就有泉水及珍宝随身，又能值遇世尊出家证果？」佛陀开示大众：「迦叶佛住世时，波罗奈国有一万八千位比丘在山林中精进用功，坐禅行道。一天，有位长者偶然间来到山林里，看到他们如此精进，心中甚是欢喜，于是回家准备混合诸种香而成的清净水来供养这群僧众沐浴，并以种种上好肴膳斋僧。用完斋，长者还准备了各式珍宝置于香水盆中供养众僧，并且发愿生生世世护持三宝。因为这样的功德，所以长者从此不堕恶道，常生天上人间，并有泉水、珍宝伴随出生。这位长者就是现在的孙陀利比丘，因为供养众僧沐浴、饮食，所以感得端正殊胜的果报。」
波斯匿王听完佛陀的开示后，心开意解，欢喜奉行佛陀教法。

The Cause of Sundari’s Majestic Appearance
In the past, when the Buddha was teaching and guiding beings at the Bamboo Grove (Kalandaka) in Rājagṛha, the queen of Pasenadi gave birth to a boy of exceptionally dignified and rare beauty. His eyes were as clear and bright as those of the kunala bird, so the king named him “Kunala.”
King Pasenadi cherished this son deeply. He not only dressed him in exquisite garments adorned with precious ornaments, but also had attendants carry him throughout the city and its surrounding villages. Wherever they went, the king would happily ask, “Is there anyone in the world as handsome and dignified as my child?”
On one occasion, a merchant stepped forward and said, “Your Majesty, I have something to report. Please promise not to be angry, and I will speak truthfully.” After the king agreed, the merchant said, “In my hometown, there is a boy named Sundari. His appearance is extraordinarily beautiful, like that of a celestial being, surpassing the prince by hundreds of thousands of times. Even more remarkable, when he was born, fragrant springs naturally gushed forth in the house, and various treasures filled the place.”
Upon hearing this, King Pasenadi sent word that he would go to meet Sundari. When the village chief learned of this, he discussed it with the villagers: “Since the king wishes to see Sundari, it would be better for us to bring him to the palace as a sign of respect.” After deciding, they dressed Sundari carefully and brought him to the palace to meet the king.
When King Pasenadi saw Sundari, he was astonished that such a dignified and majestic person could exist in the world. He then brought Sundari to the monastery to meet the Buddha, wishing to ask about the cause of such extraordinary karmic results.
When Sundari saw the Buddha’s majestic appearance, radiating light like hundreds and thousands of suns, he felt deep reverence and joy, and respectfully bowed to the Buddha. The Buddha then taught him the Four Noble Truths: suffering, its cause, its cessation, and the path. Sundari immediately attained insight and realized the fruit of a stream-enterer (Sotāpanna).
Having tasted the benefit of the Dharma, Sundari requested to renounce the world and practice under the Buddha. The Buddha compassionately accepted, saying, “Come, bhikṣu. Your hair shall fall away, and you shall be clothed in the Dharma robe.” Sundari instantly assumed the appearance of a pure monk. He practiced diligently thereafter and, before long, attained the fruit of an arahant.
King Pasenadi then asked the Buddha, “World-Honored One, what causes allowed Bhikṣu Sundari to be born with springs and treasures accompanying him, and to encounter you and attain enlightenment?”
The Buddha explained to the assembly: “During the time of Kashyapa Buddha, in the country of Bārāṇasī, there were eighteen thousand monks practicing diligently in the mountains, meditating and cultivating the path. One day, a wealthy elder happened to visit the forest and, seeing their diligence, felt great joy. He returned home and prepared pure fragrant water mixed with various scents to offer the monks for bathing, and also provided them with fine meals. After the meal, he placed various treasures in basins of fragrant water and offered them to the monks, making a vow to support the Three Jewels throughout future lifetimes. Because of this merit, he never fell into the evil realms, was often reborn among gods and humans, and was accompanied by springs and treasures at birth. That elder is now Bhikṣu Sundari. Because he offered bathing water and food to the monks, he received the karmic result of extraordinary beauty and excellence.”
After hearing the Buddha’s teaching, King Pasenadi gained understanding and joyfully practiced according to the Dharma.
