醉翁受五戒得解脱
佛陀时代，距祇洹精舍七里之远，有一老者嗜酒如命，佛陀的弟子阿难时常前往劝谏。我无法忍受这样的限制，所以才不去精舍。」老者不听从阿难的劝导，依然如故地饮酒。
一日，老者又喝得醉醺醺地走在回家路上，一不小心，一脚踢到路边的树根，跌倒在地，疼痛无比。老者面对突如其来的痛楚，相当后悔，心想：「阿难尊者常常劝我要亲近佛陀，我却不肯听从，以致现在全身痛不可言。」老者回到家后，告诉家人欲前往佛所，大家听了相当惊讶，心想：「为何一直不肯前去晋见佛陀的老者，会突然改变心意？」
老者来到祇洹精舍的门口，阿难赶紧禀告佛陀：「那位嗜酒如命的老者已经来到精舍了。」佛陀问：「是五百只白象拖他来的吗？」阿难回答：「是他独自前来。」佛陀告诉阿难：「其实这五百只白象已在老者身上。」于是老者在阿难的带领下，顶礼佛足，并且向佛说道：「伟大的佛陀！我久闻您在此说法，却因愚痴而没能早一点来晋见您，请您慈悲赦免我的罪业吧！」
佛陀听完老者的请求，问道：「你说说看，如果累积了五百车的木柴，想要用火将它烧尽，应当用几车的火方能烧尽呢？」老者很有信心地回答：「根本就不用多大的火，只要如豆一般的火苗，便可将其烧成灰烬！」佛陀又问老者：「你身上这件衣服穿多久了？」老者说：「已经有一年多了。」佛陀接着又问：「那么，想要洗去这件衣服上的污垢，需要几年的时间才能洗净？」老者不加思索地答道：「佛陀，只要有纯灰汁一斗，须臾之间便能洗净。」
佛陀听完后，开示老者：「你所累积的罪业就像那五百车的木柴，亦如同穿了一年多衣服上的尘垢，只要你受持五戒，即能得到清净。」于是佛便为其说法，老者心开意解，即得不退转的菩萨果位。

The Drunken Old Man Receives the Five Precepts and Attains Liberation
During the time of the Buddha, about seven li away from the Jetavana Monastery, there lived an old man who was addicted to alcohol. The Buddha’s disciple Ānanda often went to advise and admonish him. The old man said, “I cannot bear such restraints, so I do not go to the monastery.” He did not listen to Ānanda’s exhortations and continued drinking as before.
One day, the old man was again staggering drunkenly along the road on his way home. Carelessly, he kicked a tree root by the roadside, fell to the ground, and suffered intense pain.
Faced with this sudden agony, the old man felt deep regret and thought to himself, “Venerable Ānanda often urges me to draw near to the Buddha, but I refused to listen. Now my whole body aches beyond words.” After returning home, the old man told his family that he wished to go to see the Buddha. Everyone was quite surprised, thinking, “Why has this old man, who has always refused to go and see the Buddha, suddenly changed his mind?”
When the old man arrived at the gate of the Jetavana Monastery, Ānanda quickly reported to the Buddha, “That old man who is addicted to alcohol has come to the monastery.” The Buddha asked, “Was he dragged here by five hundred white elephants?” Ānanda replied, “He came by himself.”
The Buddha said to Ānanda, “In fact, those five hundred white elephants are already within him.” Then, under Ānanda’s guidance, the old man paid homage at the Buddha’s feet and said, “Great Buddha! I have long heard that you teach the Dharma here, but because of my foolishness I failed to come and see you earlier. Please compassionately forgive my karmic offenses.”
After listening to the old man’s request, the Buddha asked him, “Tell me, if one has accumulated five hundred cartloads of firewood and wishes to burn them all with fire, how many cartloads of fire would be needed to burn them completely?” The old man replied confidently, “There is no need for a great fire at all. Just a flame the size of a bean would be enough to burn them all to ashes.”
The Buddha then asked the old man, “How long have you been wearing the clothes you have on now?” The old man answered, “It has been more than a year.” The Buddha continued, “Then how many years would it take to wash away the dirt on these clothes?” Without hesitation, the old man replied, “World-Honored One, with just one measure of pure ash lye, the dirt could be washed away in an instant.”
After hearing this, the Buddha instructed the old man, “The karmic offenses you have accumulated are like those five hundred cartloads of firewood, and like the grime on clothes worn for more than a year. As long as you uphold the Five Precepts, you can attain purity.” The Buddha then taught him the Dharma, and the old man’s mind opened in understanding. He immediately attained the irreversible Bodhisattva fruition.
