Foundations of Dzogchen Contemplative Practice

Dzogchen contemplation is often misunderstood as a practice that requires no preparation and jumps directly to resting in awareness. In reality, stable and effective contemplation depends on clear view, a workable body–mind foundation, and a non-forcing approach. This article outlines the essential foundations that allow Dzogchen contemplation to become grounded and sustainable.

1. Fundamental View: Innate Awareness

1. Awareness is not created

It is already present.

2. Experience is not improved

Nothing needs correction.

3. Recognition of the present

Recognizing knowing as it occurs.

2. Necessary Preparation: Capacity of Body and Mind

1. Relative bodily stability

Not dominated by discomfort.

2. Emotional manageability

Basic self-regulation is present.

3. Orderly daily life

Reducing continual mental drain.

3. Relationship Between Calm and Awareness

1. Calm supports stability

Reduces coarse distraction.

2. Awareness is the core

Not an object of focus.

3. Calm and awareness are non-dual

Settled yet clear.

4. Core Method: Direct and Uncontrived

1. No constructed object

No form is taken as reference.

2. No state modification

Clarity and dullness are equally workable.

3. No judgment added

Awareness remains as it is.

5. Clarifying “Resting in Awareness”

1. Not fixing attention on awareness

Effort obscures.

2. Not maintaining clarity

Maintenance is fabrication.

3. Relaxing identification

Content is not followed.

6. Three Key Shifts in Contemplation

1. From content to knowing

Attention returns to the fact of knowing.

2. From a knower to ownerless presence

No located subject.

3. From sporadic to familiar

Repeated recognition over time.

7. Common Deviations and Corrections

1. Blankness

Reintroduce clear knowing.

2. Straining

Relax effort and return to naturalness.

3. Conceptualization

Reduce analysis; emphasize immediacy.

8. Integrating Contemplation into Life

1. Recognition in sitting

Brief and clear.

2. Return in movement

Applicable in all postures.

3. Continuity amid situations

Awareness remains through emotion and tasks.

9. Signs of Maturation

1. Less condition-dependent

Awareness is readily available.

2. Non-abiding in states

Clarity comes and goes freely.

3. Natural conduct

Less contrivance, less resistance.

Conclusion

The foundations of Dzogchen contemplation are not elaborate techniques but repeated recognition of innate awareness. With adequate bodily and emotional capacity, clear view, and non-forcing practice, contemplation shifts from occasional experience to stable familiarity. Strong foundations allow effort to relax and recognition to become natural, revealing that the essence of practice lies not in attaining special states, but in returning again and again to present knowing itself.
