The Zen Practitioner’s Way of Life
Awakening is not a one-time event but a capacity that must be repeatedly returned to and stabilized in daily life. Without ongoing practice, clarity is easily covered by habit and busyness; with skillful practice, awakening can remain present within ordinary activities. This article outlines practical ways to sustain awakening through everyday routines.
1. Understanding “Sustaining Awakening”
1. Not maintaining a special state
Awakening is not a constant peak experience.
2. Frequent return to awareness
Each moment of seeing is awakening.
3. Reducing the momentum of ignorance
Thoughts arise, but are not followed.
2. Core Principles of Daily Practice
1. Frequency over duration
Many brief returns outperform long sessions.
2. Simplicity over complexity
Fewer methods are easier to sustain.
3. Presence over idealism
Work with what is possible now.
3. Morning Practice: Setting the Tone
1. Awareness upon waking
Sensing body and breath first.
2. Brief sitting
Five to ten minutes is sufficient.
3. Setting an intention
A reminder to “remember to see.”
4. Daytime Practice: Awakening in Activity
1. Pause before action
One conscious breath before moving or speaking.
2. Body as anchor
Feet, breath, or physical contact.
3. Seeing emotions as they arise
Knowing precedes fixing.
5. Awakening at Work
1. Single-task focus
Avoiding unnecessary multitasking.
2. Noticing effort
Releasing tension when seen.
3. Reviewing attitude after results
Observing mind rather than judging outcomes.
6. Awakening in Relationships
1. Awareness before expression
Seeing defensiveness and expectation.
2. Listening fully
Letting others complete their thoughts.
3. Returning to the body in conflict
Preventing emotional overwhelm.
7. Key Practices During Stress and Emotion
1. Neither escaping nor suppressing
Allowing emotion to be present.
2. Naming without judging
“Anger is here,” “anxiety is here.”
3. Returning to felt experience
Emotion is energy, not instruction.
8. Evening Practice: Integration and Release
1. Reviewing the day
Seeing without evaluation.
2. Noticing residual tension
Allowing the body to unwind.
3. Returning to breath before sleep
Ending the day with clarity.
9. Common Obstacles and Adjustments
1. Forgetting to practice
Forgetting itself becomes an object of awareness.
2. Perfectionism
Imperfect awareness is still awareness.
3. Misunderstanding loss of awakening
Awareness was never truly absent.
10. Letting Awakening Become the Ground
1. Maintain a small set of core practices
Avoid constant method changes.
2. Verify awareness in life
Check if conflict and exhaustion decrease.
3. Long-term gentleness
Awakening stabilizes through familiarity, not force.
Conclusion
Daily practices for sustaining awakening are not about holding onto a state, but about repeatedly returning to clear awareness in the midst of life. When practice is simplified, integrated into ordinary activities, and freed from perfectionism, awakening becomes less dependent on conditions and more readily accessible. Through these small yet consistent returns, clarity stabilizes and life unfolds with greater authenticity and ease.
