为法忘躯
久远劫前一位善根深厚的太子，名叫昙摩钳，他好乐善法，派人四处寻觅懂得佛法的善知识，却苦无所获。忉利天王知道他的愿心，想试验他的发心是否坚固，于是化作凡人优塞来到王宫，表示能解佛法。太子得知立刻出迎，顶礼接足奉为上座。
「我这法世间希有难得，恐怕太子您不愿意付出代价！」优塞为难地说。太子立即表示不惜倾所有一切，只愿听闻佛法，解除烦恼痛苦。优塞要求说：「那么请太子挖一大火坑，投身供养法宝，便能传授。」
昙摩钳毫不犹豫地命令侍卫，挖掘深坑，并燃火于坑中。国王臣民们，见太子为了听闻佛法牺牲身躯，便向他哀求：「请看在国家前途上不要牺牲自己，我们愿意做奴仆供优塞差遣。」而太子却坚定的说道：「我累劫以来历经无数生死投转，以这色身在人道造贪瞋痴恶业，在畜生道受人鞭打负重、为人所食，在地狱一日间丧身无数，痛彻心髓，苦无间断。从未发心为法布施，今日此造业之身能供养法，实在是因缘殊胜，希望大众成就我上求佛道的愿心！」
优塞于是升座说法道：「常行于慈心，除去恚害想；大悲愍众生，矜伤为雨泪；修行大喜心，同己所得法；救护以道意，乃应菩萨行。」太子闻后便奋身跃入火坑，但炽热的火坑却剎那间化成清凉的莲池，太子端坐于清净芬芳的莲台上。昙摩钳了达祸福无常、流转为苦的道理，为求真理为法忘躯，真是精进无畏的大菩萨！

Forgetting the Body for the Sake of the Dharma
Long ago, there was a crown prince of deep wholesome roots named Dharmakhaṇa. He delighted in the wholesome Dharma and sent people in every direction to seek wise teachers who understood the Buddha’s teachings, yet none could be found. Knowing the sincerity of his aspiration, the King of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven wished to test whether the prince’s resolve was truly firm. Thus, he transformed himself into an ordinary man named Yousai and came to the royal palace, claiming that he understood the Buddha’s Dharma. Upon hearing this, the prince immediately went out to welcome him, bowed at his feet, and respectfully offered him the highest seat.
“I possess a Dharma that is exceedingly rare and difficult to encounter in this world. I fear, however, that Your Highness may not be willing to pay the required price,” Yousai said. The prince immediately declared that he would spare nothing, wishing only to hear the Dharma and free himself from affliction and suffering. Yousai then requested, “In that case, have a great pit dug and filled with blazing fire. Offer your own body to the precious Dharma, and I will transmit it to you.”
Without the slightest hesitation, Dharmakhaṇa ordered his attendants to dig a deep pit and kindle a great fire within it. When the king, ministers, and people saw that the prince was willing to sacrifice his own body in order to hear the Dharma, they pleaded with him: “For the sake of the future of the kingdom, please do not sacrifice yourself. We are willing to become Yousai’s servants in your place.” But the prince replied resolutely, “Throughout countless lifetimes, I have passed through endless births and deaths. With this body in the human realm, I have created karma through greed, hatred, and delusion. In the animal realm, I have been beaten, burdened with heavy loads, and consumed by others. In the hells, I have died countless times in a single day, enduring agonies that pierced to the very marrow without interruption. Never once have I made an offering of this body for the sake of the Dharma. Today, this body that has created so much karma can be offered to the Dharma. Such causes and conditions are truly rare and precious. I only hope that all of you will help fulfill my aspiration to attain Buddhahood!”
Yousai then ascended the Dharma seat and proclaimed:
“Always cultivate loving-kindness,
Remove all thoughts of hatred and harm;
With great compassion, pity all beings,
And shed tears of sympathy for their suffering;
Practice great joy, rejoicing in the Dharma you have realized;
Protect all beings with the mind of the Way—
This indeed is the conduct of a Bodhisattva.”
Upon hearing these words, the prince immediately leapt into the blazing fire. Yet in that very instant, the burning pit transformed into a cool lotus pond, and the prince sat serenely upon a pure and fragrant lotus throne. Dharmakhaṇa fully realized the truth that fortune and misfortune are both impermanent, and that the cycle of birth and death is suffering. For the sake of seeking the Truth, he forgot concern for his own body. Truly, he was a great Bodhisattva of fearless diligence.
