帝释变迦兰陀竹林缘

  王舍城中住着一位长者,名为瞿沙,虽然拥有无可算计的财富,却因崇奉外道而不信佛法。当时,目连尊者以神通力观察长者,发现他将因邪知邪见而堕入恶道之中受苦,于是心生悲悯,希望以种种方便度化瞿沙长者。

  首先,目连尊者请帝释天主将佛陀所在的迦兰陀竹林,变化成拥有各式奇珍异宝及华丽幡盖装饰的巍峨宫殿。宫殿四周悬挂着宝铃,时时飘扬着清亮悦耳的铃声,地上则满布来自天上的美艳花朵。宫中亦备有数不尽的美味佳肴、珍馐百味供养佛陀及僧众。此外,伊罗钵龙王还亲自为佛陀执持幡盖,其他龙王也为比丘们执持各式幡盖;佛的两侧还站着美丽的天女,每位天女都手持精致的扇子为佛搧风。不仅如此,有数不清的护法天神以精湛的歌舞伎乐来供养佛陀。

  瞿沙长者经过精舍时,见到如此庄严殊胜的景象,打从心底赞叹,对于受到众人景仰的佛陀,亦生起虔诚的恭敬与信心。于是瞿沙长者来到佛前,祈请世尊慈悲接受应供,佛陀即默然应允。

  长者返家后,立即准备了美味可口的斋饭,等待佛陀的到来。不久,佛陀即带领众比丘至长者家中应供,并为其开示种种法要。长者闻佛所说,当下心开意解,即证须陀洹果。

  有比丘见到迦兰陀竹林种种不可思议的奇妙变化,以及天、人、龙、鬼神等以香花、幡盖、饮食、伎乐等无上庄严供养,觉得甚是稀有难得,于是向佛请示:「世尊,请问您以何种因缘,才感得如此殊胜的果报?」

  佛陀慈悲地为大众开示:「久远劫以前,有佛名为『满愿』。一日,满愿佛带领弟子,四处游行随机教化众生。当他们来到梵摩王国时,国王立刻率领文武百官出城迎接,并且恭敬地顶礼佛足,祈请佛陀能接受供养。斋僧结束,满愿佛不但为国王开示,并为其授记:『国王于来世,当得作佛,号释迦牟尼,广度众生。』当时的梵摩王就是我,因为供养佛陀及僧众的功德,所以无量世中不堕恶道受苦,天上人间常享快乐,乃至今日成佛,仍有人天供养。」诸比丘闻佛所说,皆信守教诲,欢喜奉行。

The Story of Indra Transforming the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove

  In the city of Rājagṛha there lived an elder named Ghoṣa. Although he possessed immeasurable wealth, he revered non-Buddhist teachings and did not believe in the Buddhadharma. At that time, Venerable Maudgalyāyana observed the elder with his supernatural powers and saw that, because of his wrong views and mistaken understanding, he would fall into the evil realms and suffer. Therefore, out of compassion, he wished to save and transform Elder Ghoṣa through various skillful means.

  First, Venerable Maudgalyāyana requested Lord Indra to transform the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove, where the Buddha was residing, into a magnificent palace adorned with all kinds of rare treasures and splendid banners and canopies. Around the palace hung jeweled bells whose clear and delightful sounds rang constantly, while the ground was covered with beautiful heavenly flowers.

  Within the palace were countless delicious foods and exquisite delicacies offered to the Buddha and the Sangha. In addition, the Dragon King Elāpatra personally held a jeweled canopy over the Buddha, while other dragon kings held various banners and canopies over the monks. Beautiful celestial maidens stood on both sides of the Buddha, each holding exquisite fans and fanning him. Furthermore, innumerable heavenly protectors offered songs, dances, and celestial music to the Buddha.

  When Elder Ghoṣa passed by the monastery and witnessed such a majestic and extraordinary scene, he praised it from the depths of his heart. Seeing the Buddha, who was revered by so many beings, he developed sincere respect and faith.

  Thus Elder Ghoṣa came before the Buddha and respectfully invited the World-Honored One to accept an offering at his home. The Buddha silently consented.

  After returning home, the elder immediately prepared a delicious vegetarian meal and waited for the Buddha’s arrival. Before long, the Buddha led the assembly of monks to the elder’s home to receive the offering and then expounded various teachings of the Dharma for him.

  Upon hearing the Buddha’s teaching, the elder’s mind opened to understanding, and he immediately attained the fruit of Stream-Entry (Srotāpanna).

  Some monks, having witnessed the inconceivable transformations of the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove and the supreme offerings of flowers, banners, canopies, food, music, and other adornments made by gods, humans, dragons, and spirits, found it exceedingly rare and marvelous. Therefore, they asked the Buddha:

  “World-Honored One, through what causes and conditions have you obtained such magnificent and extraordinary rewards?”

  The Buddha compassionately explained to the assembly:

  “In a distant age long ago, there was a Buddha named Pūrṇāśaya (Fulfilled Aspiration). One day, Buddha Pūrṇāśaya led his disciples in traveling from place to place, teaching and guiding living beings according to their needs. When they arrived in the kingdom of Brahmā King, the king immediately led his ministers and officials outside the city to welcome them. He respectfully bowed at the Buddha’s feet and invited the Buddha to accept offerings.

  After the meal offering was completed, Buddha Pūrṇāśaya not only taught the king the Dharma but also bestowed a prediction upon him:

  ‘In a future life, you shall become a Buddha named Śākyamuni and will extensively liberate countless beings.’

  That Brahmā King was my former self. Because of the merit gained from making offerings to the Buddha and the Sangha, throughout immeasurable lifetimes I did not fall into the evil realms to suffer. Instead, I continually enjoyed happiness among gods and humans. Even now, having become a Buddha, I still receive offerings from gods and humans.”

  After hearing the Buddha’s explanation, the monks faithfully accepted his teaching, rejoiced greatly, and practiced accordingly.
