Seeing the Nature: What Is “Nature” in Zen?

“Seeing the mind and realizing one’s nature” is a central Zen expression. While “mind” is often discussed, “nature” is frequently misunderstood. Many imagine it as a mysterious substance or an extraordinary state. In fact, “nature” is not an object, not a feeling, and not a concept—it is the very knowing that remains when misidentification drops. Understanding what “nature” is requires less addition and more release.

1. What “Nature” Points To: Not a Thing, but Awareness Itself

1. Not an observable object

Anything that can be seen or described is not it.

2. Not a mental state

Calm, joy, or emptiness come and go.

3. The capacity of knowing

The awareness that is present right now.

2. Why It Is Called “Nature”: Unchanging and Independent

1. Unmoved by conditions

Experiences change; awareness remains.

2. Not dependent on causes

It is not produced by effort.

3. Neither increasing nor decreasing

Practice does not add to it; confusion does not subtract from it.

3. Common Misunderstandings to Avoid

1. Locating nature in the body

It is not in the head, chest, or any place.

2. Mistaking blankness for realization

Dullness is not awakening.

3. Chasing special experiences

Experiences pass; nature does not.

4. How to “See” Nature: Turn Back, Don’t Search

1. When thoughts arise, look back

Who knows this thought?

2. When perceptions appear, look back

Who is aware of this perception?

3. When emotions surge, look back

Who is recognizing this emotion?

5. Relationship Between “Seeing the Mind” and “Seeing Nature”

1. Seeing the mind

Understanding how thoughts and reactions operate.

2. Seeing nature

Recognizing awareness itself within that understanding.

3. Not sequential

Recognition can occur instantly within clarity.

6. Practice After Recognition: No Abiding, No Labels

1. Do not fixate on “having realized”

Fixation creates new attachment.

2. Use daily life as verification

Relationships and work test clarity.

3. Let awareness guide conduct

Realization becomes lived wisdom.

7. How to Verify Alignment With Nature

1. Less clinging

Situations grip the mind less.

2. More ordinariness

No need for dramatic experiences.

3. Greater clarity amid complexity

Awareness remains present under pressure.

Conclusion

“Nature” is not something to possess but the clear knowing already present; not a distant destination but what can be recognized by turning back now. Seeing the mind clarifies mental processes; seeing nature recognizes the awareness that does not rise and fall with them. As attachment to concepts, experiences, and identities loosens, nature reveals itself as simple, steady clarity—verified not by claims, but by a more awake way of living.
